Final Fantasy IX Nears 25th Anniversary: New Website, Official Merch, and the Remake That Refuses to Stay a Rumor

April 1, 2025

Final Fantasy IX turns 25 on July 7, 2025. Yes, it's been that long. Somewhere, Vivi is having an existential moment about time and mortality—and honestly, the same. To celebrate, Square Enix has quietly rolled out a new anniversary website and a bunch of nostalgia-loaded merchandise that feels equal parts heartfelt tribute and suspiciously timed marketing move.

And while the official line is all about looking back, longtime fans can't help but notice that this warm-up act looks a lot like the start of something much bigger.

A Quick Reminder Why FFIX Still Matters

For the uninitiated—or those who need a refresher between Final Fantasy releases—FFIX is the one with the monkey-tailed thief, the runaway princess, and a black mage who'll break your heart in under ten hours. Released in 2000, it was a throwback to the franchise's high-fantasy roots after two more modern entries. Think castles, crystals, talking rats, and existential dread wrapped in whimsy.

Zidane is your lead: charming, scrappy, kind of a flirt. Garnet (or Dagger, if you're respecting her incognito hustle) is a princess with a conscience. Vivi's coming-of-age story could emotionally destroy a small country. And Steiner is like a walking panic attack in armor, but we love him for it.

It's a game about identity, memory, and belonging. And 25 years later, it still hits just as hard.

Square Enix Drops Merch—and Possibly Hints

On the newly launched site, Square is offering a collection of 25th-anniversary goodies that walk the line between collector's dreams and emotional manipulation (in a good way). So far, the lineup includes:

"Vivi and Grandpa's Journey" is a beautifully illustrated picture book that will be released on July 2, 2025. Prepare to cry in hardcover.

A vinyl soundtrack titled "Timeless Tales" will arrive on July 9. It features classic tracks and a newly recorded version of "Melodies of Life."

Highly detailed character figures of Zidane and Garnet, alongside plush versions of Vivi and Steiner, because adulthood means paying rent and owning plushies.

A surprisingly stylish eyewear collab with Zoff because nothing says "fantasy RPG" like limited-edition designer glasses.

A themed lottery is coming in July, which may or may not be how you finally get that perfect FFIX wall scroll.

The merch drop is thoughtful and varied, clearly aimed at longtime fans—but let's not pretend it doesn't feel like a warm-up act. Square Enix doesn't do nostalgia without a strategy. And the real question on everyone's mind is the one they haven't answered yet.

The Remake Rumors That Won't Die

If you've been lurking in FFIX forums (or just mildly online since 2021), you already know where this is going. The Nvidia GeForce Now leak listed a Final Fantasy IX Remake alongside several unannounced games. Most of those titles have since come true. FFIX? Still hanging out in rumor purgatory, waiting to be confirmed or denied.

There's also that mysterious animated series announced in 2021—targeted at kids, sure, but a strange move unless Square was planting seeds. Combine that with the current push of products, and it's hard not to squint and see a strategy taking shape.

Square Enix has gone quiet about less. But FFIX fans are the hopeful type. They're used to reading between the lines. And when a company starts giving you plush toys and vinyls months before a major anniversary? It's not wild to think something's cooking.

What Fans Want (Hint: It's Not a Gritty Reboot)

FFIX fans understand what they want from a remake: don't mess with the tone. This isn't the game to reimagine as a dark, brooding saga. The original was charming, theatrical, and heartfelt—with enough depth to devastate you quietly.

Fans are hoping for a modern, faithful remake, voice acting that elevates emotion, real-time or smart turn-based combat that doesn't feel glued to 2000-era design, fully reimagined cities, expressive cutscenes, and a score that hits just as hard—just louder.

They want the same story, retold with modern tools and respect for what made it special. Not everything needs to be reinvented. Some things need to be seen again more clearly.

This Isn't the Celebration—It's the Warm-Up

So far, Square Enix's moves have been quiet. There is a website here, a merch drop there, no press conference, no event—just a steady drumbeat of attention ahead of July. That's what makes it interesting.

They're not just marking 25 years of Final Fantasy IX. They're reminding you it still matters.

Whether a remake reveal comes at the Tokyo Game Show, via live stream, or completely out of the blue (looking at you, "Available Now" trailer dreams), the build-up is starting to look a lot like a prelude—not a finale.

And if Square Enix plays this right, fans won't just be celebrating the past this summer. They'll be getting ready to return to Gaia—this time with modern lighting, full voiceover, and a combat system that doesn't require a snack break between turns.
